Alternate Tomato and Potato in a checkerboard. Each occupied square touches a different crop type that supplies Water Retain. This is a practical maintenance layout, not a maximum-profit claim: it does not supply Weed Block, Harvest Boost or Quality Boost.
Your 3×3 planting layout
Five tomato plants and four potato plants. Keep every square planted to maintain neighbouring crop bonuses.

- Seed shopping list
- 5 Tomato Plant Seed + 4 Potato Seed
This fills nine 1×1 crop squares. Keep replacement potato seeds available.
- Tools
- Hoe + Watering Can
Prepare the soil and water every planted square initially.
How to use this setup
- Prepare nine adjacent crop squares with the Hoe.
- Plant rows Tomato–Potato–Tomato / Potato–Tomato–Potato / Tomato–Potato–Tomato.
- Water all nine squares with the Watering Can before their next growth tick.
- Remove weeds manually; the layout provides no weed-prevention crop.
- Replant harvested potato squares promptly and water the replacements; replace tomato plants after their final harvest.
Priorities and progression
- 9 planted squares: 5 tomatoes and 4 potatoes.
- All nine squares have an orthogonal different-type Water Retain neighbour while the complete pattern is planted.
- No claim of automatic weed control, harvest amplification, star quality or fixed gold per hour.
Why the checkerboard works
The useful interaction is between two different crop names, not simply between two Water Retain plants. Adjacent tomatoes do not hydrate one another through the crop bonus. Alternating them with potatoes supplies a compatible neighbour to corners, edges and the centre without requiring a larger multi-tile crop. An empty square changes that local coverage, which is why replacement seeds are part of the plan.
