EVE Online fitting guide: build a usable ship and join your first fleet

Plan an EVE Online fit around hull bonuses, CPU, powergrid, capacitor, weapons and your fleet role before buying the complete ship.

In EVE Online, your build is the ship, its modules, ammunition, drones and the pilot skills that support them.

OPMetaBuildReviewed 2026-10-17Practical guide

In EVE Online, your build is the ship, its modules, ammunition, drones and the pilot skills that support them. Begin with an activity you can describe: a mission, exploration trip or role in a fleet. A more expensive hull does not automatically solve that activity. Design something you can operate, understand and replace before committing most of your wallet to a single launch.

Let the hull bonuses define the first decisions

Read the ship’s bonuses and decide which weapon or utility plan they support. Check high, medium and low slots, weapon hardpoints and rig calibration separately: an empty high slot is not proof that another turret fits there. Choose ammunition that works with the fitted weapon. Before treating a shared fitting as complete, check whether it also specifies drones and the charges required for its active modules.

Simulate the fit before shopping

The in-client fitting simulator lets you examine a ship and modules you do not own. Use it to check CPU and powergrid, then inspect modules for missing pilot skills. A fitting that works for another character can exceed your current resources or training. Save a version you can actually fly rather than purchasing expensive pieces for a future plan while leaving today’s ship unusable.

Check the rhythm, not only the damage number

Review how propulsion, weapons and your chosen repair or utility modules affect capacitor use. Then think about when each module needs to run. A configuration can be suitable for short, controlled engagements without supporting every module indefinitely. Keep your intended range and escape decisions in the same plan; a simulated damage figure cannot show whether you can maintain position or respond when the situation changes.

Test with a replacement budget

Buy the complete usable fitting, not only the hull. Include ammunition and practical supplies, then leave money for another ship. On an ordinary activity, note what actually interrupts you: application of damage, capacitor, incoming damage or travel. Change the relevant module category and repeat. Avoid adding several expensive upgrades at once, since that makes it hard to identify which one helped.

Use the fleet’s actual doctrine

Before joining, ask for the requested hull, role, fitting and any accepted beginner substitutions. The fleet may need tackle, logistics or utility more than another damage ship. Confirm the communication channel and the orders you must recognise before undocking. Share the exact saved fitting when asking for help; a ship name alone omits the decisions the group needs to review.

Before the next session

  • Choose an activity and read the hull bonuses.
  • Check CPU, powergrid, skills, charges and drones in simulation.
  • Keep enough ISK to replace the full fit.
  • Confirm your fleet role before undocking.
