The idea

A single-class Battle Master lets you learn positioning and resource use without planning a multiclass respec. The aim is a dependable melee party member, not a perfect damage screenshot. Choose a two-handed weapon or a shield approach, then keep your equipment and feats consistent with that choice.

Skills and tools

  • Battle Master at Fighter level 3 — manoeuvres provide tactical uses for superiority dice.
  • Trip Attack — a control option when the target can be affected.
  • Precision Attack — useful when landing an important weapon attack matters.
  • Action Surge and Second Wind — separate an offensive resource from a recovery tool.

Equipment priorities

  • For a melee Strength approach, prioritise Strength and Constitution; preserve a sensible Dexterity score for initiative and other checks.
  • Use armour and weapons with which the character is proficient.
  • A two-handed setup and a one-handed shield setup have different damage and defence trade-offs.
  • Do not adopt an accuracy penalty simply because a feat is popular; inspect the current hit chance.

Combat plan

  1. Inspect enemy position and the surface around your target before moving.
  2. Reach a useful target without exposing the rest of the party to unnecessary danger.
  3. Spend a manoeuvre for a clear purpose: control, accuracy or pressure.
  4. Use Action Surge when the additional action can change the encounter, rather than automatically on the first weak enemy.

Progression order

Keep Fighter levels if you want a simple progression. Extra Attack arrives at Fighter level 5; later class features reward staying with the class. Replenish limited resources through the appropriate rest and check the game’s current descriptions. Party composition changes which defensive and control choices you need.

Limits and alternatives

Melee characters can lose turns to poor access, elevation or control effects. Honour Mode can alter encounter behaviour. This guide does not assume a specific companion composition or a scripted sequence of unique items.
