FFXIV beginner guide: jobs, main scenario and duty basics

Understand FFXIV jobs, role actions, the main scenario and level sync. Prepare your hotbars and equipment for a first dungeon.

Story unlocks, job quests and level-synced duties shape progression. A job is a complete combat kit, not a talent tree to freely mix with other jobs.

OPMetaBuildReviewed 2026-10-17Practical guide

FFXIV character progression combines story access with the abilities of the job you are playing. Raising a level alone does not replace the quests that introduce systems and duties. Use the Main Scenario Guide to keep your next meaningful unlock visible.

Build a reliable job foundation

Complete the class and job quests relevant to your character and equip the job soul crystal when required. Read the job gauge alongside the actions that generate or spend it. Arrange frequently used global-cooldown actions together, with defensive and role actions nearby. A guide written for maximum level can include tools your current duty removes.

Follow the unlocks, not only the experience bar

Continue the main scenario when a dungeon or new area is unavailable. Check quest prerequisites before assuming that extra levelling will unlock it. You can learn additional classes and jobs on the same character; save a gear set for each one so changing weapons does not leave an incomplete equipment set.

Adapt to level sync

Before the first pull, check which actions are available at the duty’s synced level. Tanks keep enemy attention and plan mitigation; healers support survival while contributing when safe; damage roles maintain attacks without ignoring mechanics. Avoid moving a targeted area attack through the party. Use an unfamiliar dungeon to learn one mechanic at a time.

Keep equipment and practice aligned

Check the weapon, permitted job and item-level requirement before entering a duty. Keep an empty or obsolete slot from undermining the whole set. Practise the actions you actually have instead of memorising a long opener too early. Endgame materia choices and timings require a specific job, level and patch context.

Before your next session

  • Advance the main scenario and relevant job quests.
  • Save a complete gear set for the job you enter with.
  • Check your synced hotbar before combat begins.
  • Identify one role action you have not yet used.
