ESO beginner guide: skill lines, resources and dungeon roles

Learn ESO skill progression, Health, Magicka and Stamina, then prepare a coherent damage, healing or tank role for your first dungeon.

Character skills draw from class, weapons, armour and other unlocked lines. The selected party role should guide your resources and skill bars.

OPMetaBuildReviewed 2026-10-17Practical guide

In ESO, selecting a class is only the beginning of a build. Your weapons, equipped skills and unlocked lines determine the tools you can actually use. Build around a clear activity rather than spreading every new point across unrelated options.

Keep a resource budget for combat

Health, Magicka and Stamina serve different needs. Read the cost of your damage and support actions, while preserving enough resources for defence and movement. If you repeatedly stop attacking because one pool is empty, examine costs and recovery before simply adding another expensive skill. A larger resource pool alone does not teach the timing of a fight.

Develop the lines you intend to use

Skills and skill lines improve through their associated activities and equipment. Keep relevant class and weapon abilities in your learning setup instead of leaving future tools untouched. Examine a morph’s description before choosing its new behaviour. Guild and world lines have their own unlocks; owning a class does not automatically provide every skill mentioned in a guide.

Give every bar slot a purpose

Organise a short damage sequence, a way to recover and the defensive or support tools needed for the activity. When weapon swapping is available, practise returning to the correct bar before adding a complicated sequence. Inspect each weapon’s skill requirements so the secondary bar still works after an equipment change.

Enter a dungeon with the role you prepared

Queue for the role your skills and equipment can perform. A tank needs tools for enemy control and survival; a healer supports the party’s recovery; damage players still avoid mechanics and use their utility. Keep an inexpensive, understandable set while learning. A specialised trial setup should state its group assumptions rather than silently relying on them.

Before your next session

  • Read the resource cost of your frequent actions.
  • Keep intended class and weapon lines progressing.
  • Practise bar swaps without losing your place.
  • Check that the queued role matches your actual skills.
