OSRS beginner guide: quest goals, combat styles and Prayer

Plan Old School RuneScape progression through quest requirements, combat styles, equipment accuracy and Prayer, without confusing it with RuneScape.

A skill and quest-driven sandbox with its own combat rules. Progress is separate from modern RuneScape, so keep equipment and training advice game-specific.

OPMetaBuildReviewed 2026-10-17Practical guide

Old School RuneScape progression is a network of skills and unlocks rather than a single character-level ladder. Pick a useful destination, quest or equipment requirement, then work backwards to the skills that open it. This makes a short session more focused than training whatever number happens to be lowest.

Turn a quest unlock into a training plan

Read the quest list and its requirements before gathering supplies. A travel unlock can make many later sessions easier, while a quest reward may contribute experience towards another goal. Split an ambitious quest into one achievable skill target and one supply task. Check membership and previous-quest requirements before buying everything for the final step.

Separate combat style from attack type

The selected combat style determines which skills gain experience; the attack type affects which defence the weapon contests. Attack helps melee accuracy and weapon access, while Strength contributes to melee damage. Read your weapon’s available modes and the enemy’s weaknesses before assuming the most expensive weapon is always the better training option.

Prepare food, ammunition and a return route

Take food appropriate to the fight and carry the ammunition or runes your chosen method requires. Check your route back to a bank and the risks of the area before travelling with valuables. When learning a new encounter, watch the timing of movement and attacks instead of repeatedly clicking faster. OSRS actions follow a server-tick rhythm.

Treat Prayer as a managed combat resource

Active prayers consume Prayer points and must be restored. Read the protection or offensive effect before using it, and avoid assuming a protection prayer prevents every encounter mechanic. Practise switching the relevant protection while keeping food and movement accessible. Early progression should make these controls readable before expensive gear experiments.

Before your next session

  • Set one quest or travel-unlock goal.
  • Verify the experience style selected on your weapon.
  • Bring the required runes or ammunition.
  • Plan food, Prayer restoration and the return trip.
