OSRS free-to-play melee starter: iron kit and training priorities

A simple OSRS free-to-play melee setup with named iron equipment, combat-style training goals, food preparation and clear upgrade decisions.

A skill and quest-driven sandbox with its own combat rules. Progress is separate from modern RuneScape, so keep equipment and training advice game-specific.

OPMetaBuildReviewed 2026-10-17Starter build

Use this inexpensive melee kit to understand early Old School RuneScape combat on an unrestricted free-to-play account. It is not a restricted-account pure build. Attack, Strength and Defence all have a purpose, and the selected combat style controls where your training experience goes.

Named starting equipment

Start with an iron scimitar, iron kiteshield, iron full helm, iron platebody and iron platelegs when your account can equip them. Leather boots and leather gloves fill simple remaining slots. An amulet of power is an optional market purchase, not a prerequisite for the first fights. Keep coins for food and replacements instead of buying a costly cosmetic cape.

Train the skill that opens your next upgrade

Use the accurate melee style when working towards weapon requirements, aggressive for Strength and defensive for Defence. Check the style tooltip after changing weapons. An early goal is to bring these skills towards 20 while learning rather than maximising only one immediately. As Attack and Defence unlock the next metal tiers, inspect the equipment requirement before spending.

Choose manageable targets and bring food

Begin with ordinary low-level enemies around Lumbridge and fight one target at a time. Watch your hitpoints and eat before the next hit becomes dangerous. Bank loot and restock food regularly. If you spend the whole trip eating or miss repeatedly, inspect the enemy, equipment and selected attack type rather than moving to a stronger target.

Upgrade for useful access, not appearance

Move to a higher scimitar tier when its requirement is met and the price fits the account budget. Improve armour when the relevant Defence requirement is available. Keep a quest goal alongside training so future travel and equipment access progress too. Inspect death and area rules before leaving the familiar route; this starter does not prepare an account for Wilderness risk or boss mechanics.

Before your next session

  • Check each named item’s requirement in game.
  • Confirm which skill receives combat experience.
  • Carry food and bank valuable loot.
  • Set the next weapon requirement as a short goal.
Free-to-play unrestricted-account learning setup. Suggested skill targets are an editorial practice route, not an optimal experience-per-hour claim.
