FFXI beginner guide: Trust, Records of Eminence and job progression

Start or return to FINAL FANTASY XI with Trust companions, Records of Eminence, job preparation and a practical route through Vana’diel.

Vana’diel becomes easier to navigate when you separate three kinds of progress: improving a job, opening story and travel access, and building the support that lets you fight consistently. Trust companions and Records of Eminence connect these goals. Start with the character’s real unlocks rather than an endgame equipment list that assumes years of completed content.

Prepare the job you are actually playing

Check your main job, available actions and equipment restrictions after changing jobs. Learn which attack or spell you use repeatedly, which resource limits it and how you recover between fights. A support job contributes another set of possibilities once unlocked, but it does not replace learning the main job. Keep spells, abilities and equipment organised before travelling.

Recruit support that fills a missing role

Complete the introductory Trust unlock and learn the summoning rules shown for your character. Alter egos have defined behaviour and party roles, so choose healing, tanking or damage support according to what your own job lacks. Do not choose only familiar names. Test how a small encounter begins and ends, and watch whether the companions are actually contributing as expected.

Make Records of Eminence support the session

Open the objective list before heading out and select tasks compatible with the activity you planned. Follow introductory objectives when a system is unfamiliar. Rewards and Sparks of Eminence can support progression, but inspect their current exchange options before spending. The useful habit is to connect an objective to an action you were going to perform, then return to review completed rewards.

Keep missions and local quests distinct

Nation missions and individual quests have different purposes and prerequisites. Write down the current objective, destination and required interaction instead of assuming a higher job level alone will unlock it. Activate useful travel access when you encounter it. A short trip becomes more productive when it combines the relevant story step with an appropriate Eminence objective.

Review one fight before buying more equipment

After a difficult encounter, check the cause: missing recovery, an unsuitable target, unprepared spells or a Trust role gap. Correct that specific problem before buying unrelated items. Keep an affordable reserve for travel and basic supplies. Once the job and support work together, choose one story or access goal for the next session instead of attempting every system simultaneously.

A short practice exercise

Select one available Eminence objective and one familiar monster. Complete a short fight with the Trust roles you chose, then check who held attention and supplied healing. Review the objective reward before repeating. This links the companion selection to an observable result instead of changing the party without knowing what was missing.

Before your next session

  • Check job, spells and equipment before leaving town.
  • Unlock Trust and identify the missing party role.
  • Select compatible Records of Eminence objectives.
  • Record the next mission prerequisite and travel route.
  • Review your reward exchanges before spending Sparks.
Official-service fundamentals. Trust availability, summoning limits and exchange options depend on current character progress.
