The idea

Great Sword rewards choosing the right moment more than pressing a long sequence as quickly as possible. This learning setup puts reliable contact and safe recovery ahead of a theoretical maximum hit. It is a weapon framework, not a season-specific armour set.

Skills and tools

  • Charged attacks — match the charge you attempt to the length of the opening.
  • Focus Mode — use its aiming tools to improve alignment, without treating it as protection from a hit.
  • Focus Strike — learn how wounds and the weapon-specific action interact in the current game.
  • Defensive and repositioning options — practise them before using every opening offensively.

Equipment priorities

  • Weapon: compare the damage profile and sharpness you can maintain during a hunt.
  • Armour: upgrade defence and choose useful survivability before chasing a fragile damage combination.
  • Skills: consider charge-time and consistency support, checking each skill’s current wording.
  • Supplies: bring healing and sharpness maintenance; a build is not only the equipment screen.

Combat plan

  1. Observe a monster’s recovery from a safe distance.
  2. Approach the part you can reach consistently and attempt a charge that fits the opening.
  3. Use Focus Mode to correct alignment when appropriate.
  4. Recover, reposition and maintain the weapon instead of forcing another swing into an incoming attack.

Progression order

Learn the weapon against a familiar monster before judging a new set. Upgrade when a named weakness appears: too much time bouncing or sharpening, repeated deaths, or poor access to the intended hitzone. Weapon and armour changes should match the monster and the stage of progression.

Limits and alternatives

Fast targets and poor positioning can turn a strong-looking setup into missed charges. Multiplayer changes who the monster faces. This guide does not assign speedrun tiers or assume a complete late-game decoration collection.
